Joe Wieland – BIO:

Owner of J. Wieland-Consulting, LLC

Mr. Wieland has been involved with Quality Management System implementations since his Paper Products role in 1980 with the Proctor & Gamble Company.  His responsibilities included supplier development for Pampers, Luvs and Attends and then transitioned to Packaging Development during the changeover from Pampers in cartons to flexible film packaging then called “poly bags”.  Mr. Wieland spent three years in Germany developing the supply sources and performing process capability studies for polyethylene packing suppliers that would relocate to the US for domestic supply to P&G.   The German suppliers were exposed to the first ISO 9001-1987 version of the standard through the efforts of Mr. Wieland.

In 1990 he joined M&W Packaging (now Nordenia Technologies) as Director of Quality and assisted with the startup of their blown film and converting facility in Cape Girardeau, MO which became registered to ISO 9001-1994 under his direction.  Among his customers were Tyson Foods, Ralston Purina and Proctor & Gamble.

A return to Cincinnati took place in 1995 as the Vice President of CWC International, Inc. providing consulting, training, ISO 9000 implementation and Internal Auditor Training to regional companies via classes taught by Mr. Wieland at the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce.   This opportunity led to the start of J. Wieland-Consulting, LLC in 1998 to the present.

Mr. Wieland is a RABQSA Lead Auditor and attended the University of Cincinnati, Southern Ohio College and the Ohio College of Applied Science.  Prior to his position with P&G he was a CNC programmer and milling machine operator in the Special Machine Division of the original Cincinnati Milling Machine Company.  He is very hands-on with the implementation and continual improvement initiatives, to include Process Audit Training, Root Cause Analysis (using 8D/5Y) and the reorganization of Corporate Training programs.  He is a Senior Member of the ASQ, active with the ASQ Audit Division and has been recommended for membership to the US TAG Committee to ISO/TC 176 responsible for authoring the ISO 9001:2008 standard.

Currently Mr. Wieland is expanding his skills as an auditor of food packaging companies and acquiring the Safe Quality Food (SQF) auditor certification through EAGLE Food Registrations.  His prior work experience with the production and testing of food contact packaging serves as qualification for the SQF auditor certification.

Mr. Wieland’s employers and clients have all passed their ISO 9001 Registration Audit on the first attempt, and several with no minor nonconformances or observations.  In his words, “it’s really about the value of the system itself and not the plaque on the wall”.
